Drawing Lab-Lesson Nine

This is for Lesson Nine of Drawing Lab. We're to draw two portraits using our non-dominant hand. In my case, this is my left hand. Here is the photo I drew from for my first portrait. Sorry, Angelina!

This was kind of fun and harder than I thought it would be! Thanks to Cameron at Paint Myself Pretty for posting these Drawing Lab lessons. I'm enjoying this so much!

Drawing Lab-Lesson 8

Lesson 8 over at Paint Myself Pretty for the Drawing Lab is to make three random paintings using red, blue and yellow paint. Just slop it on any old way. After it dries try to find an imaginative animal in it and draw the details in pen. This is what I found hiding in mine.

At first all I could see in this was the snake shape, but then it reminded me of a camel. I thought that was too obvious, so I went for the Bronto!


There was a butterfly leaping out at me, but I thought maybe I did that on purpose. I really couldn't see anything else until just now when I saw the duck.

This is my favorite! I knew it was a yak from the beginning. I just had to find a photo online to get the details. :)

This lesson was fun! Looking forward to Lesson Nine. But most importantly...I caught up with the class finally! lol!

Drawing Lab-Lesson 7

I kind of enjoy drawing monkeys! I don't have a large variety of art supplies. No pastels and few felt tip pens other than black and a few colors. But I did what I could with what I had. Here are my two little guys:

The monkey on the left I used a red colored pencil, a green felt tip, a charcoal pencil and a black pen. The one on the right I used orange watercolor, blue colored pencil, purple felt tip pen and peach colored pencil for the guy's finger.

Drawing Lab Lesson 6

A funny thing happened at work today. I forgot how to draw! Here are my 20 Great Danes. I have to admit, I absolutely hated this lesson! :( I think I'm a little ADD and after I've done a thing once I have a craving to try something different, so having to draw the same thing over and over makes me NUTS! Having said that, I forced myself, lol! I can't believe how badly I drew these dogs! If I had drawn the dog only once, I think I would have taken my time and done a much better job. Knowing I had to do it TWENTY TIMES, I rushed through the drawings. It was also difficult to fit this big dog in a 3"x5" space. (I didn't have index cards and didn't want to waste what little sketching paper I have left, so I used notebook paper.)






Now that I'm finished whining about this lesson I'm off to see what the next lesson is all about! (It was a long, hard day at work! Sorry!)

Drawing Lab Lesson 4 and 5

I have to admit, I couldn't even begin to draw this bird without pausing the video. The screen shot changed every half second or so and it was impossible. I probably negated the whole reason for the exercise. But here is what I got. Figuring out how the tail feathers were put together was the hardest part and I never got a really clear picture of them from the video.

If you haven't seen this video already, you really are in for a treat! Fact or fiction? ;)

Here are three more. I couldn't resist drawing Cameron's little cheetah baby. I don't think I quite captured his babyishness. Then there's a Maned Dog (or was it wolf? They described it as a fox on stilts!) and an anteater. I tried to draw while letting the video run on these. I did much better in that respect!

Sunday Sketches...

I've been doing so much this week that I couldn't choose just one! This first one is a zentangle inspired piece of art for the Diva's Weekly Challenge. This was my first try at a zentangle and I'm hooked! These three were for the Drawing Lab lessons. The idea was to draw as many cats as you could from your imagination. No photos or real cats allowed. It's harder than it sounds! Join us online!

Drawing Lab Lesson 3

Yup, I'm hurrying to catch up with the class! Here is lesson 3 which involves drawing quick sketches of a moving animal. Our horse pasture is right outside the window over my art desk, so it was pretty easy to sit here in my comfy chair and draw horses. Don't confuse these with my blind contour drawings. They're just as bad! I think I prefer drawing from a still photo. I need more time to study and draw and erase and draw again... Here is what I ended up with. These are of two different mares and a yearling colt. Don't laugh. ;)

Drawing Lab-Lesson 2

Blind contour drawing; that's the next lesson we're working on with the Drawing Lab virtual drawing group I'm participating in. We're supposed to draw giraffes and we do this while looking at the giraffe photo and not looking down at our paper. The results are hilarious, but it's to teach your hand to follow what your eye sees. I think I prefer looking back and forth, lol! Anyway, here are my results. (I probably glanced a little here and there I must confess. And they STILL turned out this badly.)

Finished my cats!

Here is my submission for Lesson 1 for the Drawing Lab lessons over at Paint Myself Pretty. Even though some of those participating mentioned drawing 30 cats, I didn't see a particular number on Cameron's post, so I just drew until I felt like calling it quits! :D I hope that's okay.


I had lots of fun with this, although I found it really difficult to draw without a reference photo to look at. I guess that was the idea; to force us to imagine instead of leaning too heavily on these helpful props. I'm a little too obsessive about copying and making the drawing look like the photo, so this was good for me!

Hope everyone else is having fun with this. I have some catching up to do!

Cats, and lots of them...

I'm joining Cameron at Paint Myself Pretty as she works her way through the Drawing Lab book. The first assignment was to draw lots of cats while lying in bed. I'm not in bed, because my bed doesn't have a headboard to lean against, and I can't draw when I'm REALLY laying down, so... Here are my first few attempts. I'll go on to draw more. I think we have to do thirty! Oh, and we can't look at a photo. It has to be from our imagination, which is difficult for me!

I just love using pen on bristol board! :)
It's a day off for me, so I'm going to try to fit in a lot of art!
